Semi-Hydro 101: What It Is and Why Your Plants Will Love It
No tanks, no pumps, no chemistry set. Semi-hydro is just an inert growing medium sitting above a reservoir, and it is the cleanest way to grow a houseplant indoors.

What semi-hydro actually is
Full hydroponics suspends roots in moving, aerated water. Semi-hydro is the calmer relative: the plant sits in a pot of inert pellets, usually LECA, which are baked clay balls full of tiny air pockets. Underneath sits a reservoir. Water travels up into the pellets, air fills the gaps between them, and the roots take both.
Nothing in the medium feeds the plant, which sounds like a drawback and is actually the point. Nutrition comes from what you add to the water, so you control it exactly instead of hoping the bag of compost got it right.
Soil or semi-hydro
Switching a plant over, step by step
Rinse everything off
Soak the root ball, then wash until no soil is left. Leftover organic matter is what rots later.
Trim what is soft
Healthy roots are firm and pale. Anything brown and mushy comes off with clean scissors.
Pack in soaked LECA
Rinse the pellets, soak them, then work them gently around the roots in the inner basket.
Fill and wait
Pour into the port until one long red flash, then leave it. New water roots take a few weeks.
Expect a sulk. A plant that has spent its life in soil has to grow a different kind of root, and it will drop a leaf or two while it does. Hold the fertiliser until you see new growth.
Where the pot fits in
A semi-hydro setup needs a reservoir, a way to move water up into the medium, and some way of knowing the reservoir is empty. That is exactly what a Thirsty Pot is: a tank, a cotton wick and a light. Common questions
Do I have to use LECA?
No. Pumice and coco coir both wick well. LECA is just the easiest to find and the easiest to rinse and reuse.
Will the reservoir go stagnant?
Not in normal use. Let it run down to the light before refilling and flush the tank with plain water every month or two.
Can I start a cutting straight in semi-hydro?
Yes, and it is the easiest way in. A cutting grows water roots from the start, so there is no transition to survive.
