A self-watering pot holds its water in a reservoir under the soil rather than in the soil itself. A cotton wick runs from that reservoir up into the root ball, and the soil draws water along it at the rate the plant is actually using it. Nothing is pumped and nothing is timed, so there is no schedule to keep and no app to open.

What makes these different from most self-watering pots is the sensor in the base. When the reservoir runs low it casts a red light onto the floor beside the pot, so you find out because you walked past, not because you remembered to check. Two AA batteries run it and they are not included.

There are three sizes. The Egg holds 2.0 L of water and gives 1.5 L of root space, which suits small plants on a shelf or a desk.
